Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such medications must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
